You’ve probably heard Microsoft Fabric come up in nearly every conversation about data, but you may still be wondering what it actually is. This guide explains Microsoft Fabric in plain language: what the platform does, its main components, and which organizations are most likely to benefit from it.

What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is a unified platform designed to support an organization’s data and analytics needs.

In practice, it is an all-in-one cloud service that brings together capabilities that previously required several separate tools: data ingestion, transformation, storage, analysis, and visualization.

The main components of Fabric

Fabric is not a single tool. It is a collection of specialized workloads built on the same data foundation. Here are the main ones.

  • Data Factory: Orchestrates data movement and transformation, with hundreds of connectors to cloud and on-premises sources, including ERP systems such as SAP.
  • Data Engineering: Provides Apache Spark-based notebooks for transforming large volumes of data using Python, Scala, or SQL.
  • Data Warehouse: A full SQL-based engine for enterprise analytics, with performance comparable to a traditional data warehouse.
  • Data Science: Supports the development and deployment of machine learning models, including experiment and model tracking.
  • Real-Time Intelligence: Processes streaming data and event flows, making it useful for scenarios such as monitoring industrial equipment or IoT sensors.
  • Power BI: The reporting and dashboard layer many teams already know, now connected directly to OneLake without requiring duplicate copies of the data.

These workloads are designed for specific roles, including data engineers, data scientists, business analysts, and database administrators. But they can also work together as part of a single end-to-end solution, from ingesting raw data to delivering the final report viewed by leadership.

OneLake: the foundation connecting everything

All of these components rely on OneLake, a unified logical data lake that is automatically provided with every Fabric tenant.

Microsoft describes it as the OneDrive for data: a single, central location where teams can store and govern data instead of creating multiple copies across different systems (Microsoft Learn, OneLake, as of the publication of this article).

Governance and AI, built in from the start

Fabric provides centralized capabilities for data discovery, access control, and governance. This helps organizations manage data access, sharing, and compliance consistently across workloads.

The platform also integrates with Microsoft Purview for data lineage and sensitivity labels, as well as Microsoft 365, making it possible to analyze and consume data directly in tools such as Excel and Teams.

AI capabilities are also built into the platform to support data preparation, analysis, and development, reducing the need to manually integrate separate services.

Who is Microsoft Fabric for?

Fabric is particularly relevant for organizations whose data comes from several disconnected sources, where teams such as data engineering, data science, and Power BI analysts work in silos using different tools, or where upcoming AI initiatives require a strong and well-governed data foundation.

It can also be a natural next step for organizations that have reached the limits of what Power Query and Power BI can reasonably transform before analysis.

On the other hand, a small team with straightforward reporting needs and a limited amount of already clean data will not usually need the full scope of Fabric. In that case, Power BI alone may be more than enough, and adding Fabric could introduce complexity without delivering proportional value.

How much does Microsoft Fabric cost?

Unlike Power BI’s per-user model, Fabric is priced by capacity: a shared pool of computing power used across all workloads.
