Olymel

Giving Olymel’s sales teams the analytical autonomy they need

The context

Olymel is a Canadian leader in the production, processing, and distribution of pork and poultry products. The company operates an extensive network of plants across Canada and the United States and exports its products to more than 65 countries.

Every day, its operations, supply chains, and customers generate significant volumes of data. Olymel wanted to better leverage this information to support consumer behavior analysis and improve decision-making across the organization.

The challenge

Olymel's data was spread across multiple systems and data providers, including Nielsen, Costco, Loblaws, Sobeys, AS400 databases, and Excel, CSV, and Parquet files. Each source relied on its own product codes and business logic. This fragmentation made cross-functional analysis time-consuming, costly, and prone to errors.Business teams also relied on manually built reports, without a single source of truth or consistent data across divisions. Olymel needed a modern analytics platform capable of unifying its data, ensuring its quality, and supporting decision-making across the organization.

The task at hand

We designed and implemented a modern data warehouse on Microsoft Fabric, built on a four-layer medallion architecture: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Each layer plays a specific role, from ingesting raw source data to delivering enriched, business-ready tables. We also implemented SCD1 and SCD2 mechanisms to preserve historical data while maintaining optimal performance.

At the core of the solution, we developed a product unification mechanism that connects Olymel's internal product codes with universal UPC codes, allowing production, sales, and distribution data to be analyzed together with confidence.

The SODA Library was integrated into the data pipelines to automate continuous data quality checks and regression testing. Finally, we implemented a Power BI Design System to help business users create their own reports while maintaining a consistent reporting experience.

The end result

Olymel now has a single source of truth for its operational and commercial data.Business teams can generate reliable analyses on their own, without relying on technical support for every new request.

The integration of key partners, such as Sobeys, also demonstrates the platform's ability to evolve alongside Olymel's strategic priorities. Beyond the technology itself, the project has helped establish a stronger data culture, supported by a scalable architecture and high data quality standards.
